Hi Hattie,

It sounds like you're probably going to need to replace your transmission. Unfortunately, this is an expensive and time consuming repair.

The cost of replacing your transmission will come down to parts and labor. Here's what you can expect to pay on average:

Parts= $275-$750 depending on the quality of the transmission.

Labor= 4-5 hours $250-$420 depending on the shop's hourly rate and the skill of the mechanic.

Total= $525-$1,170+

Can you get me a quote on a Catalytic Converter installed on my 1997 Chevy s10 pickup?  It has the 4 cylinder engine.  I've heard this can be really expensive.  Alex P. - Deerfield Beach, Florida.

We found a pretty big range in quotes.  Most of the cost is definitely in the parts - principally the new catalytic converter.  The price for that part alone can range from $313 to $750.  Labor is pretty reasonable.  Most shops can get it done in less than 2 hours.  Total cost including parts and labor will range from $450 to $825 depending on the repair shop or dealership.  (these quotes do not include taxes, disposal fees on the old parts, or other miscellaneous fees.)
