Exhaust manifold gasket replaced.

Kenny Baker

Hi Kenny,

The cost of replacing your exhaust manifold gasket will come down to parts and labor. Here's what you can expect to pay on average:

Parts= $20-$60 depending on the quality of the gasket.

Labor= 2-2.5 hours $100-$210 depending on the shop's hourly rate and the skill of the mechanic.

Total= $120-$270+

This is in the intermediate level range of a repair job, so if you have the tools needed I'd suggest trying to do the repair yourself to save on labor costs.

Hi Lawan,

This is a bit broad of a symptom, but if I had to take a shot in the dark, I would guess you have a hole in your exhaust somewhere. You can either pay someone to weld it shut if it's small enough of a hole, or simply replace the exhaust. Here's what you can expect to pay on average:

Parts= $55-$565 depending on the quality of the exhaust.

Labor= 2-3 hours $125-$300 depending on the shop's hourly rate and the skill of the mechanic.

How to replace a broken exhaust hanger on your car

exhaust hanger 150x150 How to replace a broken exhaust hanger on your car

Exhaust Hanger

If you are hearing an awfully loud racket coming from underneath the car and maybe even a display of fireworks i.e. sparks flying from the back of your car - you may have a broken exhaust hanger. The exhaust hanger is made of thick rubber - think of a heavy-duty thick rubber band - and one day the muffler strap wears out.

A broken hanger is not good for the muffler and needs to be fixed. Take a look underneath your car - where your exhaust pipe is and locate the muffler. You'll see a rubber hanger - there may be more than one. If the hanger broken you will see it immediately.

1997 Chevrolet S10 Catalytic Converter

Can you get me a quote on a Catalytic Converter installed on my 1997 Chevy s10 pickup?  It has the 4 cylinder engine.  I've heard this can be really expensive.  Alex P. - Deerfield Beach, Florida.

We found a pretty big range in quotes.  Most of the cost is definitely in the parts - principally the new catalytic converter.  The price for that part alone can range from $313 to $750.  Labor is pretty reasonable.  Most shops can get it done in less than 2 hours.  Total cost including parts and labor will range from $450 to $825 depending on the repair shop or dealership.  (these quotes do not include taxes, disposal fees on the old parts, or other miscellaneous fees.)
