I need to replace rotors and pads.

Gregg Kreischer

Hi Gregg,

This repair is fairly simple, and the cost will break down into parts and labor:

Parts= Rotors $25-$175 & Brake Pads $25-$75 depending on the quality of the parts.

Labor= $100-$250 Depending on hourly rate of shop, and skill of mechanic.

Replacing your Cherokee's rotors and brake pads yourself is an intermediate level fix, and a great way to get better acquainted with your truck, not to mention a great way to save a bundle on labor costs.

Here's how it breaks down:

Parts= $40-$110 depending on quality of brake pads.

Labor= $50-$150 depending on the shop's hourly rate.

The quote above is based on the cheapest way to replace your brake pads, which means doing it yourself.

How to replace drum brakes

drum brake diagram 150x150 How to replace drum brakesDrum brakes are not seen on every model of car these days, but they are often still used for rear wheel brakes, since they are cheaper to produce, and it is easier to attach the emergency brake system to a drum brake. Older cars use drum brakes on all wheels, as well. Replacing drum brakes is a repair which can be done at home, but requires the right equipment and careful attention to detail, and is best undertaken if you already have experience with DIY car repair. You will want to set aside a few hours for this task, and if you are not familiar with brake systems, you will want a Chilton's repair guide for your vehicle to consult as a reference. Remember that you will want to replace the drum brake on one wheel at a time, so that you have the other wheel as a reference point in case of confusion.

Your vehicle has front and rear brake pads, they all may need to be replaced or only front or only the back ones.  Most often the front brake pads will need to be replaced more frequently than the rear brake pads.

Changing a broken or burned out light bulb in pickup truck is a little more complicated than changing it in a regular sedan. If you are not prepared it may turn out to be a frustrating experience. Luckily, it's not that much complicated, especially when you are prepared for a little more work than when changing the brake light in the family car.

If you are not sure if your brake light is burned out, you can check the brake lights yourself.
