Hi Robert,
It sounds like you either need a new transmission, or if its not too destroyed, possibly rebuild it. A new transmission will cost you a good chunk of time and money. The cost of replacing a transmission will break down into parts and labor. Here's what you can expect to pay on average:
Parts= $350-$700 depending on the quality of the transmission and if it is new or used.
Labor=4 hours- 1 day $250-$425 depending on the shop's hourly rate and the skill of the mechanic.
Total= $600-$1,125+
Remember that this is the worst case scenario for getting a whole new transmission installed. If you can rebuild your current transmission, it should cost you about $500-$750+ depending on the garage, and the repair will take a bit longer.
You also may want to consider looking up the Kelly Blue Book value of your car, and see if it's even worth dumping that much money into it.
It may be time to cut your losses and go looking for a new car.
