Why doesn't your car start?

Most of us have probably had this happened at least once or twice as owner/driver of a car. You hop into your car in the morning, ready to head out work or school, your turn the key in the ignition - the car doesn't start. First thing that often comes to mind is a dead battery, but there are other reasons for why your car won't start.

If the battery in your car is dead, nothing happens when you turn the key. Meaning, the engine makes no sound, it doesn't start at all or in other words the engine doesn't turn over. Hopefully you have jumper cables nearby and can get the car started.

If the engine doesn't turn over but the lights and radio are working, the problem is possibly with the starter. The starter may not be getting electricity from the battery to the starter or to the engine. Possibly a bad ground connection or damaged wiring.

Did you check the fuel? Lack of gas in the tank usually sounds like the car wants to start, i.e the engine is turning over but doesn't start.

Is your transmission  in Park?  A car's engine will only start in Park and Neutral position.

The engine may also be turning over too fast or too slow. There may not be compression. If the compression is not happening this can be due to a broker timing belt or chain.

Are you missing a spark? Some knowledge and tools are needed to check this and you may wish to leave it for a reliable mechanic to check.

No matter what ends up being the cause for your car not starting, when you have to have your car towed to a mechanic, the more specific you can be about what exactly is or is not happening when you tried to start the car, the better and faster the mechanic is to diagnose and fix the problem.
