Should You Choose a Chain Auto Repair Shop?

When your car breaks down it is sometimes a problem finding the right auto repair shop to take it to because you do not want to be ripped off. There are many ways to go and many automotive mechanics to choose from. One option for many people is the chain repair shop.

You know who they are and what they charge. They are the Firestones, Goodyears, Midas and so forth. It used to be easy to make a decision on these because they were specialty shops. Everyone knew to go to Midas or Meineke for breaks, Goodyear and Firestone for tires. Today all of these shops to more and it's challenging to find which hones will do the best job for car repair services.

Many of these auto repair shops have a reputation for doing good work. Who doesn't know a Sears automotive shop that can take care of your needs. Many of these car repair services have guarantees on their work while others have a reputation for doing weird things to cars and having you bring them back. The point is that you have to be very careful when you take your car to anyone.

Car Repair Shops and Reputation
One of the first things to do before you go to one of these general auto repair shops is to check around the neighborhood to see what people think about them. You can also go into the shop to get an auto repair estimate and talk to people that are in the shop. You might find some people who are there for the free estimate like yourself but you will also find people who take their cars in regularly.

Asking around with your friends and colleagues will also tell you whether a certain car repair service is reputable for good and honest work.

Problems with Chain Car Repair Shops
Chances are that if there are problems with a chain car repair service you will find out through asking people. Some of the chains have managers every other week. You should check around for prices because some of the chains are much higher for some repairs. If you go to a small shop or find an independent mechanic they may give a better deal.

As an example, a brake job at a shop like Midas may cost you $1,000 because they will automatically want to change the brakes, calipers and rotors if you have an older car. Some independent automotive mechanics will assess your car and decide that all you need to do is change the brakes. They may see no wear on your calipers or rotors. The difference in price will be amazing.

Many chains have complete auto repair these days and although they do local car repair they have shops all over the country. Many have a certain way of working because of this and it can be detrimental to the person who needs their car repaired.

Before You Buy Get a Car Repair Quote
Most shops will give you a free inspection for the repair and it is a good idea to have this done before you say yes to car repair services. You can always check with smaller shops for more car repair information so that you make sure you are getting the best deal.

One of the challenges with a chain is that they are independent franchises and some managers may give better work than others. Some may instruct their people to make limited repairs so that the car owner has to come back for more repairs. Others will do a stellar job and you will be able to trust the auto repair center.

When you go to any auto repairs garage is to have as many auto repair estimates as possible so you can make an informed choice. Keep your options open and check out the automotive mechanics in each shop. Are they certified mechanics that do certified auto repair? Are they knowledgeable about the car you drive? These are questions you should ask of any shop.

Some of the chain auto repair centers will also do what is called a price match. If you get an estimate at one place then take it to a second chain mechanic shop, they will match the first price just to get your business. This can be an advantage if there is a certain shop that you have always liked to make your complete auto care over time.

Another thing that you should look for in any auto repair shop is consistency. Will this be a place where you can take your car and be confident that the care repair services will be exactly what you are looking for? Will they take good care of your car? You will also want to make sure that you pay a fair price for the car repairs and that they are not charging you over the top prices just because they know that they can get it.

Chains are more likely to push your car in and out so for some auto repair services you might want someone who will take their time with your car. Chains may be good for their specialties like brakes, alignments and fluid changes but they may not be the best idea for more complicated procedures.

At any rate, it is a good idea to make a thorough check of the car repair shop whether it is a chain or an independent shop. This will make sure that you have general auto repair that is exactly what you need. You will also want to have it done within the time frame that you specify.

The bottom line is to think hard and long about taking your car to a chain auto service center. They may not be the best idea for the job in all cases but they can make a difference if you need quick service. They also may be the best for getting a brake job or other short term maintenance issues.

  1. brakes,not breaks

  2. I agree with most of the points made here, but would add one. National chains usually offer a national warranty that will help you if you travel out of town. Make sure that your independent shop also has a good (at least 12mo/12,000 mile) national warranty. Independent shops have access to this kind of warranty through parts and trade associations, and you can then feel more confident when you travel out of town.
