Radiator Repair and Maintenance Information
If you maintain your own vehicle, you need to keep in mind general radiator maintenance and what you need to do in order to keep your radiator working properly. A radiator is used to remove the heat produced by the engine. Without proper maintenance, radiator replacement might be needed.
The radiator is a reservoir for the antifreeze and water mixture. The mixture is then pumped through the engine to remove heat. When the mixture returns to the radiator it passes through the core of the radiator which consists of metal tubes with fins, and as the air passes through it lowers the temperature of the coolant mix.
When the coolant mix passes through the engine, it collects dirt over time which will develop into sludge. The sludge can cause blockage in the system and slow down the movement of fluid, the reduced flow causes the engine to run hotter than designed and the coolant mix will start to evaporate, the blockage also adds pressure, which can cause hoses to burst.
To insure that there is no sludge build up, the radiator should be flushed once a year. If overheating is still a problem the radiator may need to be boiled to remove deposits and possibly the core replaced.
