Owning any type of vehicle, proper engine maintenance is key to the long life of your vehicle's engine. Properly maintaining your vehicle is always a good idea, and almost always results in a longer lasting vehicle and fewer repair bills. Engine maintenance is not particularly difficult, but should be something every vehicle owner should know how to do.

Good engine maintenance simply involves keeping all fluids topped off and clean, as well as checking potential problem areas and performing preventive maintenance.

The most important part of good maintenance is changing the oil and oil filter in your vehicle's engine in order to keep your engine properly lubricated and running well. Over time your engine's oil will have a build up of dirt and sediment which translates to a less protection for your engine. Your vehicles oil should be changed every 3000-5000 miles (depends on the manufacturers oil change schedule).

Other common maintenance work involves making sure your vehicle's brake fluid, transmission fluid and radiator fluid levels are full and clean so all these areas can function properly. Also changing out air filters can help keep out contaminants and increase fuel economy. To maintain high compression the spark plugs should be replaced to sustain high levels of performance and fuel economy.  Some modern engines only require spark plug replacement once every 100,000 miles.

Refer to your vehicle's maintenance schedule to understand if and when you might need to replace your engine's timing belt.  Most modern vehicles require the replacement of the timing belt between 50,000 and 90,000 miles of driving.  There may be other recommended maintenance tasks like replacement of fuel filters or spark plug wires.  Most owner's manuals will outline these recommended maintenance items.
