Inflating your tires to the proper tire pressure

  • Tire pressure is one of the things on your vehicle that needs to be checked most frequently.

Tire pressure should be checked at least once a month or when the tire looks low.

To check your tire pressure

1). First check the maximum tire pressure rating for the tires on your car.   (should be located on the tire)

2). Unscrew the valve stem caps.

3). Then take a tire pressure gauge and firmly hold it against the valve stem (making sure there is no air leaking).  Double check the pressure to insure accuracy.

4). Depending on the tire pressure gauge, the current pressure should be displayed. If in doubt of tire pressure repeat.

5). Fill tire according to your vehicle manufacturer's recommendation.  On many modern cars, the recommended tire pressure(s) can be found on a label affixed to the pillar inside the driver's side door.  It is possible your manufacturer might recommend a different tire pressure for the front and back tires.  If your vehicle does not have a label, you might also check the owner's manual.  (be sure the tire pressure is below the "maximum" tire pressure as indicated on the tire sidewall.)  Double check the tire pressure with your tire pressure gauge.
