How to replace turn signals and other bulbs
Noticed that the turn signal in dashboard is blinking like crazy? It likely means that one of your turn-signal lights is out, which puts you at increased risk for getting a ticket, which leads to bunch of headaches. But with a little bit of patience, some tools (aka screwdriver or wrench and some paper towels) and a quick trip to your local car parts shop, it’s a quick, easy and inexpensive fix.
The first thing you need to do is go to a car parts store. They have a whole isle of bulbs, but don’t worry, just ask an attendant. They'll look up your vehicle in their database and help you locate the bulb(s) you need (you may want to replace other bulbs at the same time). After you purchase the bulb, it’s time to get to work. You can probably do this in the parking lot, actually. If you don’t have tools on you, they may be able to lend one to you.
The next step is to take the light fixture with the broken bulb out. Depending on your make and model, the fixture is secured with screws or nuts. In some models the fasteners are located on the surface of the light, in others, you’ll have to open the trunk or hood and loosen the fasteners from the inside.
After you loosen the nuts or screws, wipe the back of the fixture down with a rag so you don’t get all the accumulated dirt and grime on you (unless that’s your thing). Then, remove any electric connectors to fixture (Carefully! Most light fixtures are made of plastic and crack relatively easily, making it a more expensive fix.). Twist or pull the holder for the bulb out of the fixture, then unscrew or pull the burnt-out bulb from its holder. Replace it with the new bulb, put the bulb back into the fixture, and reattach the electric connectors.
Before you put it all back to together, check to make sure the light is working again. Turn your lights on, turn the replaced blinker on, and if it’s a combined blinker and brake light, check the brake lights, as well. Now that it’s working again, put the fixture back in its place and reattach the fasteners. Now, you’re ready to turn to your heart’s content!
