Tire Pressure Gauge

This should be easy right? Just put in some air into the car tires. Yes, it's pretty simple and it doesn't take long. It cannot be emphasized enough how keeping your car tires evenly inflated will extend the the life of the tires, fuel efficiency and reduce other wear and tear. However checking your tire pressure is often ignored.

How do you put air into the car tires?
When you go to a gas station you will see an air pump machine, often next to the vacuum cleaners, that will do the job, with your help that is.

Drive right next to the air pump machine. The hose of the machine is pretty long and you should be able to reach each tire without having to move your car between tires.

Some gas stations may charge a couple of quarters or so, some offer this for free. The air pump will have instructions to insert coins if needed.

* Kneel down next to the tire you are about to inflate
* Take off the cap from the valve stem - similar to what you would see in bicycles - and keep it nearby
* Firmly place the end piece of the air pump over the valve stem, you should not hear air escaping - the air should now be going into the tire
* Keep filling in air until the tire looks full or for a short period of time and then check the air pressure with a tire gauge
* Remove the air pump from the stem valve
* Check the tire pressure with a tire gauge by placing it onto the valve stem - it will give you a reading
* if the air pressure is at the manufacturer's recommended level replace the cap back onto the valve stem and repeat with other tires
* if more air is needed, add some more by inserting the air pump back on the valve stem and check air pressure again

Remember put the caps back on after inflating each tire
If you do not have a tire gauge or there isn't one handy next to the air pump you can purchase one quite inexpensively, even from many gas stations, or car parts stores etc. It's a good idea to keep one in your car at all times.

To determine how much is the manufacturer recommended tire pressure check either your owners manual or you can look at a sticker at the driver side car door jamb, or a sticker somewhere in your car. You may also see a range and not just a single number.

If you prefer not to check the tire pressure yourself make sure the each tire's pressure is checked at each oil change. You could also take the car in to a mechanic or an oil change place and have them check it, but be prepared to pay a bit for the service.
