How to check your car’s engine coolant
Making sure there is enough engine coolant is important. Low amount of lack of coolant causes the engine to overheat and that can cause a lot of damage. All can be easily avoided by preventive maintenance - by checking the coolant level regularly.
Before you check the engine coolant level make sure the engine is NOT hot! Let the engine cool off a good amount of time - several minutes - before opening the coolant overflow tank.
On the side you will see level markers for full and low.
- After engine has cooled off open the hood
- Locate the coolant overflow tank - a white large plastic container with a cap on top
- Look at the side of the tank for level markers - Full and Low
- If the level is low or close to low - top it up
If you need to add coolant make sure the engine is not hot. Then open the cap on top of coolant overflow tank and pour in new coolant to the FULL level mark. Close the cap and close the hood.
If the coolant is frequently at low level or if you can't see coolant in the overflow tank you may need to take the car into a mechanic to determine if there is a leak somewhere.
