How to change a car air filter
How many times have you heard the person changing your oil tell you that you should have the air filter changed too and that they can easily do it for you. I'll only cost you an additional - whatever they quote $20, $25, $30 or more. Well the good news is that you can change the air filter yourself. It is not very complicated. And changing an air filter is something that should be done periodically - check your owner's manual for how frequently - to keep your car's performance up to par and to enhance fuel mileage.
If you are not sure what air filter is a correct one to switch out your old one with, you can remove the old filter and take it to the auto parts store to make sure you get the right replacement filter.
How to change an air filter:
Start with a parked car that has cooled off i.e. it is a good idea a wait awhile for the engine to cool of, if you have just been driving for awhile.
Grab the few tools you will need - two screwdrivers: Phillips and a regular, a butter knife.
* Open the hood and make sure it's supported.
* Find the large non-metal casing or cover, typically located around the middle of the engine compartment. It is large you should be able to miss it.
* Open the casing - locate clips that hold the casing in place and either using the butter knife or the flat head screwdriver pop/pry all of the clips open
* If you see an air filter housing tightened with screws (long ones) - unscrew the long screws
* Once you open the casing you will see the air filter - it's typically either yellow, white, orange or red
* Take out the air filter and inspect it - if you see a good amount of dirt it is time to put in the new one. Keep the old one and take it to the auto parts store to match it with a new filter.
* Put in the new air filter
* Put the casing back on and secure the clips
* Close the hood and you are done
