How to avoid an Overheating Car Engine
What is going on when your engine is overheating?
Your car's radiator or cooling system is probably not working correctly which makes your engine overheat. The cooling system probably needs to be repaired to fix the problem.
How to avoid engine overheating?
* If your car's air conditioning (or defroster) is on, turn it off.
* Turn heater on to the highest setting - if it's summer times you may want to open your car windows...
* Set the climate control to vent and set the fan blowing at the highest setting
Why? Turning the heat on will use heat from the engine. Turning the interior heat to the highest setting takes the most possible heat energy away from the engine.
Caution - please use extreme caution if you are in heavy traffic and in extremely hot weather conditions so you don't overheat yourself.
* Turn your engine off if you are idling or sitting in traffic that is not moving and put your car in gear.
* Pull over if you determine the car may not make it and turn the engine off. Especially if you are in traffic that is stop and go.
* Drive as steady and evenly as possible without fast accelerations and stops.
What is causing the overheating?
It could be one of many potential problems:
1.) Your cooling system might be low on coolant.
2.) The thermostat in the cooling system might be defective - remaining shut at high temperatures when it should be open.
3.) Radiator or cooling system blockages. Your radiator might have corrosion which reduces the effectiveness of the radiator components, reducing your vehicles ability to cool itself. You may need to flush the radiator.
4.) Other unknown issues.
If your engine is overheating it is important to take your car to a mechanic as soon as possible for a check and repair as needed.
