For anyone who likes to do work on his or her car, there is a new product available that will stop you dead in your tracks. The usual sensation of getting lost in a Home Depot, Sears, or Napa finding tools you “can’t live without” will be intensified once you come across the new line of screwdrivers from IDEAL. Here’s the down low.

Working in tight, hard-to-reach places is the bread and butter of an auto mechanic; some love it and some hate it. But what makes all of this possible is the tools we use to get the job done. Recently, IDEAL took it upon itself to design a new kind of screwdriver that will not only work for tight or hard-to-reach spots, but it also has a thumb-controlled mechanism that will hold onto the screw as you are driving it home.

The way the new IDEAL brand Grip-n-Twist™ works is through a spring-action, locking mechanism that engages and disengages with the flick of your thumb. By using the locking mechanism, a do-it-yourselfer can easily fasten both Phillips and Slotted screws with one hand. Fortunately, for all of you gear heads out there, the screwdrivers are available in both Phillips and Slotted versions and will soon be available in an array of different lengths—rumor has it that the system is being tested on socket, special, and fitted screw applications as well. In addition, the good folks at IDEAL have incorporated their patented cushion grip handle for ergonomic comfort, and a slip resistant tip for a tight lock into the screw slot.

This is a true blessing from the do-it-yourself gods. If you’ve ever had to deal with the frustration of dropping screws that don’t stick to the end of your supposedly magnetized screwdriver, or can’t get the right torque or angle because you can’t fit both your hands into the area you’re working on, the new Grip-n-Twist™ will soothe your anger and streamline your progress.

“Every contractor knows the frustration of reaching into a tight spot to install a screw, only to have it fall off the screwdriver again and again,” explained Bruce Hartranft, Product Manager for IDEAL in the March 2010 edition of Product News Network magazine. "Our newly designed screwdriver completely eliminates this problem by securely holding the screw until it is fully installed.”
