How do you find out the cause of your overheating engine? Your car's engine overheats quickly, briefly after you start the car. You may notice it within the first few minutes of driving. You might see some steam coming from the hood or there may not be any steam.

There are a few things you can do to check for possible causes for the overheating on short trips.

* Check the coolant level - if it is low - refill the coolant
* Check for leaks in the cooling system - fix leak and refill coolant
* Check Head Gasket of cylinder - replace if needed
* Check the engine drive belts - if broken or slipping, replace or tighten as needed
* Cooling fan not coming on - fan may need to be replaced or repaired
* Ignition timing is off or wrong - Ignition timing needs to be adjusted
* Vacuum leak - if leaking - replace vacuum lines as needed
* Mechanical Engine problems - check compression
* Thermostat on the engine may be stuck to closed position - replace thermostat

Some of these possible causes and fixes are fairly easy to do by yourself. If you can't pinpoint the problem you probably need to make a run to a mechanic and have them look and diagnose the problem to avoid any potential larger issues.
