Overheating car - causes and fixes

If your car engine is overheating on long trips, meaning after some period of driving there are a few things you can do to try to determine what may be causing the engine to overheat. You may see steam coming off the hood or there may not be any steam visible. Depending on the cause or if you can't determine to cause a trip to the mechanic might be in order to get the problem diagnosed and taken care of.

* Check the engine coolant level - if too low - refill the coolant
* Check for a leak in cooling system - repair as needed and refill coolant
* Clogged, dirty radiator - flush the radiator and fill with new coolant
* Check head gasket - if bad or broken - replace
* Check engine drive belts - if slipping or broken - replace or tighten
* Check electrical cooling fan - it may not be coming on - replace or repair
* Check ignition timing - may be set wrong - adjust if set wrong
* Check for a vacuum leak - if leaks - replace vacuum lines as needed
* Check engine for mechanical problems - check compression - repair if needed

One other reason for your engine overheating could be that the car is driven too hard or with a heavy load. Easing up on the pedal and lightening the load should help you there.

Some of these possible causes and fixes are fairly easy to do by yourself. If you can't pinpoint the problem you probably need to make a run to a mechanic and have them look and diagnose the problem to avoid any potential larger issues.
